About the author – Dr. Joe Herbert – BVSc BSc (Hon) ARCS MRCVS

Introduction:
Dr. Joe Herbert is a third-year cardiology resident at the University of Minnesota with a strong interest in interventional cardiology and minimally invasive vascular procedures. His path into veterinary cardiology has taken him across the globe; born in the UK, raised in Italy, and trained across three continents.
Joe completed his undergraduate degree at Imperial College London before heading to the University of Sydney for veterinary school. He stayed on in Australia after graduation, working as an emergency vet and completing a rotating internship at the Small Animal Specialist Hospital in North Ryde. From there, he returned to the UK for a cardiology internship at Southern Counties Veterinary Specialists, before matching into the residency program at the University of Minnesota.
Joe is particularly drawn to the evolving landscape of veterinary cardiology, from diagnostics to complex procedures. He approaches cases with an out-of-the-box mindset and has a strong interest in translating techniques from human cardiology into veterinary applications. While his future plans are still taking shape, his long-term goal is clear: to help build a robust cardiology service with a forward-thinking interventional program at its core.
Outside of work, Joe is kept on his toes by a high-energy Poodle named Maple. While he initially resisted the idea of bringing a Poodle into the household, his wife’s persistence won out. Despite his best efforts to feign indifference, he’s now unashamedly besotted with Maple, a sentiment she clearly shares. When he’s not wrapped up in her antics, Joe enjoys cross-country skiing during Minnesota’s frigid winters and rock climbing in the warmer months. One of his greatest passions is travelling the world with his wife, a pursuit currently on pause while residency takes precedence, but one they eagerly look forward to resuming.
