How to work as a Veterinarian in New Zealand.

Working as a veterinarian, in New Zealand how to, and what you need to know.

Veterinary Registration Requirements

To work as a veterinarian in New Zealand, you must be registered with the Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ) and hold a current Annual Practising Certificate (APC).

Veterinarians trained overseas will usually need to:

  • Have their qualifications assessed by the Australasian Veterinary Boards Council (AVBC), or

  • Hold qualifications already recognised by the VCNZ, and

  • In some cases, complete the New Zealand National Veterinary Examination (NZNVE) if your qualifications are not automatically recognised.

For veterinary nurses, registration is not a legal requirement. However, holding a recognised qualification and becoming a member of the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA) is highly recommended. It demonstrates a strong commitment to professional standards and ongoing development.

Visa Options for Veterinary Professionals

Non-New Zealand citizens will need the appropriate visa to live and work in the country. The most common options include:

Essential Skills Work Visa

Ideal for those with a full-time job offer in an occupation listed on New Zealand’s skill shortage lists. Veterinarians frequently qualify under this visa. The duration varies depending on the role’s skill level, the salary offered, and labour market demand.

Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa

This visa suits individuals with recognised qualifications, skills, and experience. Applicants submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) and, if selected, are invited to apply for residency.

Note: Immigration requirements are subject to change, so we recommend consulting a licensed immigration adviser for personalised and up-to-date advice.
